Coldplay is an excellent band, and this album is taking that excellence a step further. Like if you agree.
Their first album since 2008s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, Coldplay finally returns with their newest work, Mylo Xyloto. Experimenting even farther into new realms of music, yet keeping the same acoustic sound of their earlier work, the music in Mylo Xyloto is just as colorful and diverse as the cover art of the album. Diving deeper into new sounds, Coldplay is now experimenting with large synths and booming beats that you would not expect from the band, but they still seem to maintain the same beautiful sounds they have always had. You would think that after four amazing albums, Coldplay would manage to make a bad one for once, but the band still stays strong in what is their most musically diverse album yet.. Here is a track-by-track review of Coldplay’s latest work. Mylo Xyloto – X/10 I usually do not give intros or interludes there own individual review, but I feel like this intro is worth noting. The album starts off with various guitar riffs and clattering piano, leading into the opening song. Many will just think of this as an introduction to Coldplay’s new sound and album, but it represents more. The name Mylo Xyloto doesn’t actually mean anything; the band wants us, the listeners to determine the meaning. This opener is just to get you imagining, and come up with your own meaning for the album, there for it is impossible to rate this opener, but I felt it was necessary to share my feelings for it. Hurts Like Heaven – 8.5/10 The actual first song album, this is a fast paced, catchy tune that is meant to get you out of your seat. Martin screams, “don’t let ‘em take control,†meaning for you to get up and do something. It’s a great opener, but not the albums strongest. Paradise – 8.5/10 The albums second single, and turned out to be pretty popular. The intro rather reminds of Coldplay’s experimentation with orchestras, such as they did in Viva la Vida. Beautiful tune and a solid song. Charlie Brown – 10/10 This is the Coldplay song I’ve been waiting for! Amazing, uplifting lyrics from Chris, but the highlight is the gigantic chorus, which they leave to the guitar. One of the bands best songs to date and the chorus is truly something spectacular. Us Against the World – 10/10 Another personal favorite, this is a beautiful song all the way through. Very soft and acoustic love song with touching lyrics. The first half is left to Martins incredible voice and guitar until the rest join in with backup vocals, organ, and guitar. A simply beautiful song and another one of the albums strongest points. M.M.I.X/Every Teardrop is a Waterfall – 7.5/10 The albums first single and one of Coldplay’s more popular songs, this track is decent, but never really grew that much on me. The beat is optimistic and has a dance feel to it, but I just don’t find it that enjoyable. The lyrics aren’t great, but you can tell this song is full of raw passion, which is great but not enough to make the song the best it could be. The interlude seemed kind of unnecessary to me as well. Major Minus – 7/10 Lead by a gruesome guitar beat, this track is much darker than the rest of the album. The chorus is decent, but this is definitely not the albums strongest point. Though I do applaud the band for trying something different, I would have preferred Moving to Mars over this track. U.F.O – 9/10 The albums most acoustic record, this is pure beauty. This song sounds like it could be straight off of Parachutes, which I think fans of Coldplay’s older material will enjoy. I just only wish it was longer!Princess of China (feat. Rihanna) – 6.5/10 The highly anticipated duet with Rihanna, this unfortunately to me is the albums weakest point. The beat seems blurred and fuzzy to me and the quality of the song just seems poorly produced and weak. I can see this doing well commercially because of the large chorus and the Rihanna feature, but for me it just not compare to the rest of the album and is a poor song. I always love it when the band experiments don’t get me wrong, but I just didn’t find this that listenable. Up in Flames – 9/10 A lovely piano lead track, you can feel the emotion in Chris’ voice as he sings the hook. The lyrics are about lost love, and through the chorus is simple, it is very powerful, the emotion in this track and the chorus remind of that in Fix You. Another personal favorite. A Hopeful Transmission/ Don’t Let it Break Your Heart – 8/10 A very optimistic track with a large beat and heavy guitars. A catchy track, but nothing that really stands out. Up With the Birds – 10/10 Beginning with a simple piano melody and Chris’ vocals, this track builds up into something spectacular. It seems that the band literally fit every type of sounds in the entire album into a four-minute song, and the result is in my opinion one of their best songs to date. Like the rest of the album, this song is just raw passion and amazing instrumentals to make a masterpiece. Also, a beautiful piano outro to end the album. Whether a new or old Coldplay fan, this album is worth the buy to show support to one of the best bands in this generation. Coldplay continues to amaze as they venture to new areas of music but still keep the same sound as their first album, Parachutes. I sincerely hope this is not the band’s last effort, and we hear much, much more from them in the future. Congratulations Coldplay on another beautiful piece of raw passion and music.
Easily Coldplay's worst album. Basically the only good songs on this are Paradise and (incredibly) Princess of china and possibly Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. The rest are just fairly average songs. What happened to great songs such as Yellow, Fix you, Clocks, God put a Smile upon your Face, Viva la Vida, In my Place, Speed of Sound, Talk? Most of the songs on this album are very bland with weak lyrics and few offer anything new. I expected something much, MUCH better from my favorite band.
